GOOD TO KNOW

A guide to Musical Keyboards

Choosing musical keyboards

  • Keys and feel. Compare key count, key dimensions and any stated touch response or weighting. These features are separate from the number of sounds.
  • Connections. Check headphone, audio, USB or MIDI support for the equipment you want to connect, including any software requirements.
  • Setup and inclusions. Compare dimensions and power requirements, and confirm whether a stand, stool, pedal, adapter or headphones are included.

Comparing options

Prioritise the playing features you will use before comparing extra rhythms and sound presets. A compact portable keyboard and a digital piano can differ substantially in key action and controls. Make sure the support surface fits the instrument and the chosen playing position.

Questions about Musical Keyboards

Does every keyboard have weighted keys?
No. Check the key-action specification. Touch sensitivity and weighted keys describe different characteristics.
Are a stand and sustain pedal included?
Only when listed in the package contents. Check pedal compatibility and stand dimensions when purchasing them separately.
